Aurelio Agustín nació el año 354 d.c.en Tagaste,
ciudad situada en la antigua provincia romana de Numidia (conocida en la
actualidad como Souk Ahras, en Argelia). Hijo de Patricio, un pequeño
propietario rural, y de Mónica, nació en el seno de la familia con una posición
económica desahogada, aunque no exenta de esporádicas dificultades económicas,
lo que le permitió acceder a una buena educación. Sus primeros estudios los
realizará en Tagaste, continuándolos, el año 365, en la cercana ciudad de
Madaura (aunque se verá obligado a interrumpirlos el año 369 por dificultades
económicas); a partir del año 370 estudiará en Cartago, dedicándose
principalmente a la retórica y a la filosofía, destacando de una manera
especial en retórica, y encontrando dificultades en el aprendizaje de la lengua
griega, que nunca llegó a dominar.</div>

obra de San Agustín, lo que marcará el discurrir de todo su pensamiento. Existe
una sola verdad, la revelada por la religión, y la razón puede contribuir a
conocerla mejor. "Cree para comprender", nos dice, en una clara
expresión de predominio de la fe; sin la creencia en los dogmas de la fe no
podremos llegar a comprender la verdad, Dios y todo lo creado por Dios (la
sabiduría de los antiguos no sería para él más que ignorancia); "comprende
para creer", en clara alusión al papel subsidiario, pero necesario, de la
razón como instrumento de aclaración de la fe: la fe puede y debe apoyarse en
el discurso racional ya que, correctamente utilizado, no puede estar en
desacuerdo con la fe, afianzando el valor de ésta. Esta vinculación profunda
entre la razón y la fe será una característica de la filosofía cristiana
posterior hasta la nueva interpretación de la relación entre ambas aportada por
santo Tomás de Aquino, y supone una clara dependencia de la filosofía respecto
a la teología.</span></div>

los escépticos la posibilidad de alcanzar certeza alguna. Ante ello San Agustín
replica afirmando la necesaria certeza de la propia existencia: ¿puedo
razonablemente dudar de mi existencia, aun suponiendo que todos mis juicios
estuvieran siempre equivocados? No, dice San Agustín, ya que aun en el caso de
que me engañarse no dejaría de existir (al menos el juicio "si fallor,
sum" sería siempre verdadero, asegurando la certeza de mi existencia);
pero la certeza es triple, ya que el hombre existe, vive y entiende. </span></div>

la certeza de las verdades matemáticas. Tampoco puedo dudar de la certeza de la
realidad exterior, en la que vivo. No obstante la mente, buscando la verdad en
sí misma, se trascenderá a sí misma al encontrar en ella las ideas, verdades
inmutables que no pueden proceder de la experiencia.</span></div>

tipos de conocimiento, asegurada su posibilidad: el <b>conocimiento sensible</b>
y el <b>conocimiento racional</b>; el conocimiento racional, a su vez, podrá
ser inferior y superior. El conocimiento sensible es el grado más bajo de
conocimiento y, aunque realizado por el alma, los sentidos son sus
instrumentos; este tipo de conocimiento sólo genera en mi opinión, doxa, tipo
de conocimiento sometido a modificación, dado que versa sobre lo mutable (puede
observarse la clara dependencia platónica del pensamiento agustiniano); al
depender del objeto (mudable) y de los sentidos (los instrumentos) cualquier
deficiencia en ellos se transmitirá al conocimiento que tiene el alma de lo
sensible. El verdadero objeto de conocimiento no es lo mutable, sino lo
inmutable, donde reside la verdad. Y el conocimiento sensible no me puede
ofrecer esta verdad.</span></div>

conocimiento, desde los niveles más bajos, sensibles, hasta el nivel más
elevado, lo inteligible, la idea: "Las ideas son formas arquetípicas o
esencias permanentes e inmutables de las cosas, que no han sido formadas sino
que, existiendo eternamente y de manera inmutable, se hallan contenidas en la
inteligencia divina" (Quaestio XLVI, De ideis, 2). </span></div>

ideas sólo se pueden conocer mediante una especial <b>iluminación</b> que Dios
concede al alma, a la actividad superior de la razón. El verdadero conocimiento
depende, pues, de la iluminación divina. ¿Cómo interpretar esta iluminación?
Según la llamada interpretación ontologista la iluminación significaría que el
alma contempla directamente las ideas o esencias en la mente divina, lo que
plantea problemas teológicos, dado que de alguna manera el alma contemplaría la
esencia divina. </span></div>

nos la daría el símil que establece Platón entre el sol y el Bien: la idea de
Bien ilumina todas las demás realidades permitiendo que sean captadas
(presentándose así como la fuente del ser y del conocimiento). </span></div>

Santo Tomás de Aquino nació en el castillo de
Roccasecca, cerca de Aquino, en el año 1225, en el seno de una numerosa y noble
familia italiana. Su padre, Landolfo, descendiente a su vez de los condes de
Aquino, estaba emparentado con el emperador Federico II. Su madre, Teodora, era
hija de los condes de Taete y Chieti. Recibió Tomás su primera educación, a
partir de los cinco años, en la abadía de Montecasino, de la que era abad su
tío, permaneciendo en el monasterio hasta 1239, cuando el emperador Federico II
decretó la expulsión de los monjes. Allí realizó los estudios ordinarios de
gramática, latín, música, moral y religión. </div>

capítulos 2 y 3, encontramos formuladas las cinco pruebas tomistas de la
demostración de la existencia de Dios, (conocidas como las "cinco

hay seres de este mundo que se mueven; pero todo lo que se mueve es movido por
otro, y como una serie infinita de causas es imposible hemos de admitir la
existencia de un primer motor no movido por otro, inmóvil. Y ese primer motor
inmóvil es Dios.</span></div>

<b><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 13.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES-MX;">Eficiencia: N</span></b><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES-MX;">os consta la existencia de causas
eficientes que no pueden ser causa de sí mismas, ya que para ello tendrían que
haber existido antes de existir, lo cual es imposible. Además, tampoco podemos
admitir una serie infinita de causas eficientes, por lo que tiene que existir
una primera causa eficiente incausada. Y esa causa incausada es Dios.</span></div>

eficiente. Hallamos que en este mundo de lo sensible hay un orden determinado
entre las causas eficientes; pero no hallamos que cosa alguna sea su propia
causa, pues en tal caso habría de ser anterior a sí misma, y esto es imposible.
Ahora bien, tampoco se puede prolongar indefinidamente la serie de las causas
eficientes, porque siempre que hay causas eficientes subordinadas, la primera
es causa de la intermedia, sea una o muchas, y ésta causa de la última; y
puesto que, suprimida una causa, se suprime su efecto, si no existiese una que
sea la primera, tampoco existiría la intermedia ni la última. Si, pues, se
prolongase indefinidamente la serie de causas eficientes, no habría causa
eficiente primera, y, por tanto, ni efecto último ni causa eficiente
intermedia, cosa falsa a todas luces. Por consiguiente, es necesario que exista
una causa eficiente primera, a la que todos llaman Dios."</span></div>

<b><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 13.5pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES-MX;">Contingencia: H</span></b><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES-MX;">ay seres que comienzan a existir
y que perecen, es decir, que no son necesarios; si todos los seres fueran
contingentes, no existiría ninguno, pero existen, por lo que deben tener su
causa, pues, en un primer ser necesario , ya que una serie causal infinita de
seres contingentes es imposible. Y este ser necesario es Dios.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: ES-MX;">"La tercera vía considera el ser posible o
contingente y el necesario, y puede formularse así. Hallamos en la naturaleza
cosas que pueden existir o no existir, pues vemos seres que se producen y seres
que se destruyen, y, por tanto, hay posibilidad de que existan y de que no
existan. Ahora bien, es imposible que los seres de tal condición hayan existido
siempre, ya que lo que tiene posibilidad de no ser hubo un tiempo en que no
fue. Si, pues, todas las cosas tienen la posibilidad de no ser, hubo un tiempo
en que ninguna existía. Pero, si esto es verdad, tampoco debiera existir ahora
cosa alguna, porque lo que no existe no empieza a existir más que en virtud de
lo que ya existe, y, por tanto, si nada existía, fue imposible que empezase a
existir cosa alguna, y, en consecuencia, ahora no habría nada, cosa
evidentemente falsa. Por consiguiente, no todos los seres son posibles o
contingentes, sino que entre ellos forzosamente, ha de haber alguno que sea
necesario. Pero el ser necesario o tiene la razón de su necesidad en sí mismo o
no la tiene. Si su necesidad depende de otro, como no es posible, según hemos
visto al tratar de las causas eficientes, aceptar una serie indefinida de cosas
necesarias, es forzoso que exista algo que sea necesario por sí mismo y que no
tenga fuera de sí la causa de su necesidad, sino que sea causa de la necesidad
de los demás, a lo cual todos llaman Dios."</span></div>

perfección en los seres de este mundo (bondad, belleza,...) Y ello implica la
existencia de un modelo con respecto al cual establecemos la comparación, un
ser óptimo, máximamente verdadero, un ser supremo. Y ese ser supremo es Dios.</span></div>

actúan con un fin; pero al carecer de conocimiento e inteligencia sólo pueden
tender a un fin si son dirigidos por un ser inteligente. Luego debe haber un
ser sumamente inteligente que ordena todas las cosas naturales dirigiéndolas a
su fin. Y ese ser inteligente es Dios.</span></div>

Vemos, en efecto, que cosas que carecen de conocimiento, como los cuerpos naturales,
obran por un fin, como se comprueba observando que siempre, o casi siempre,
obran de la misma manera para conseguir lo que más les conviene; por donde se
comprende que no van a su fin obrando al acaso, sino intencionadamente. Ahora
bien, lo que carece de conocimiento no tiende a un fin si no lo dirige alguien
que entienda y conozca, a la manera como el arquero dirige la flecha. Luego
existe un ser inteligente que dirige todas las cosas naturales a su fin, ya
éste llamamos Dios."</span></div>

la verdad mediante preguntas, respuestas y más preguntas. Platón fue testigo de

variedad de temas. Entre sus ideas destaca la teoría de las formas, que
proponía que los objetos del mundo físico sólo se parecen o participan de las
formas perfectas en el mundo ideal, y que sólo las formas perfectas pueden ser
el objeto del verdadero conocimiento. El objetivo del filósofo, según Platón, es
conocer las formas perfectas e instruir a los demás en ese conocimiento. </span></div>

cartas. Se ha cuestionado la autenticidad de algunos diálogos y de la mayoría
de las cartas.</span></div>

y su teoría del conocimiento están tan interrelacionadas que deben tratarse
juntas. Influido por Sócrates, Platón estaba persuadido de que el conocimiento
se puede alcanzar. También estaba convencido de dos características esenciales
del conocimiento. Primera, el conocimiento debe ser certero e infalible.
Segunda, el conocimiento debe tener como objeto lo que es en verdad real en
contraste con lo que lo es sólo en apariencia. Ya que para Platón lo que es
real tiene que ser fijo, permanente e inmutable, identificó lo real con la
esfera ideal de la existencia en oposición al mundo físico del devenir. Una
consecuencia de este planteamiento fue el rechazo de Platón del empirismo, la
afirmación de que todo conocimiento se deriva de la experiencia. Pensaba que
las proposiciones derivadas de la experiencia tienen, a lo sumo, un grado de
probabilidad. </span></div>

obtienen el conocimiento limitado y parcial de las ideas a partir del símil
entre una caverna o cueva. En ella, los hombres, desde su más tierna infancia,
son encadenados a la parte más profunda y oscura. Estos se encuentran situados
detrás de una pared, del otro lado de la cual se coloca una hoguera que produce
luz; en el lado de la pared opuesto a los prisioneros, se colocan unos
titiriteros, que llevan figuras de objetos del mundo; de estas figuras los
prisioneros solo podían ver sombras, mientras que interpretaban como cosas, así
como las voces que escuchaban( solo eran ecos). Todas las sombras y ecos los
asimilaban como cosas existentes y reales.</span></div>
